Testing and counseling for early diagnosis of HIV infection is recommended if you can answer "Yes" to any of the following questions:

  • Do you consider yourself at risk for HIV infection?
  • Have you had any type of sex without a condom?
  • Are you pregnant? Are you planning to become pregnant?
  • Have you ever had a sexually transmitted disease?
  • Have you ever been sexually abused?
  • Have you injected drugs with a previously used needle?
  • Are you the spouse, sex partner, or needle-sharing partner of a person who injects drugs with a needle?
  • Have you been diagnosed with Tuberculosis?
  • Did you, or your sexual partner, receive a transfusion of blood or blood products between 1978 and 1985?
  • Have any of your sex partners had AIDS or a positive blood test for HIV?
  • Have you, or your sex partner(s), ever exchanged sex for drugs or money?

Current testing methods are extremely accurate for the detection of HIV antibodies in the body. Most people will develop HIV antibodies within 90 days of exposure. It is recommended that you wait 90 days after exposure before testing to have a valid result. Testing done before 90 days is considered "baseline" and may need to be repeated. If you are interested in setting up an appointment for HIV testing, or have additional questions, please call (586) 465-8434.

STD Testing:

the Macomb County Health Department also offers testing and treatment for most sexually transmitted diseases.  For more information see the Macomb County Health Department STD Program web page.
