Technology is helping to make the commitment of jury duty a more pleasant experience for jurors.
Jury duty in Macomb County has been greatly improved thanks to a joint program - the first of its kind in Michigan - with the Macomb County Clerk's office and the Mount Clemens Public Library.
Now when residents are summoned to jury duty they are provided with the opportunity to request library books. Access to the Internet makes it possible for residents to search the entire inventory of books available throughout the library cooperative and request specific materials. The Mount Clemens Public Library secures the books and delivers them to the jury room.
Working with the librarians has also made it possible for the jury room to have a collection of some 100 materials available for use by jurors. This rotating stock not only makes a wide selection available for jurors to peruse, it has also made it possible for the Clerk to cancel magazine subscriptions that totaled some $800 per year.
