Early Head Start

Head Start 0-5 annual report 2010-2011

Pregnant woman with a childEarly Head Start and Head Start preschool (Head Start 0-5) staff interact with families on a wide variety of early childhood development topics. Specific services include assistance with pre- and post-natal care, early literacy, health, nutrition, positive parent-child activities, social services, and parent education.

Both programs embrace a comprehensive vision of health for children, families and staff. The goal is to support healthy development by encouraging practices that prevent illness or injury and by promoting positive, culturally relevant health behaviors that enhance lifelong well being.

Every child’s needs are addressed on an individual basis. Services are available for children with special needs and disabilities.

Families must meet the federal income guidelines in order to “income qualify” for either program. A family automatically “income qualifies” if they are receiving on-going, public assistance (TANF, SSI, FIP, CDC) through the government, if the child is in foster care, or is a ward of the state. Priority for enrollment is based on several factors, some of which are parental status, special needs, housing situations, etc.

Early Head Start (EHS) provides year-round services, in either the home or at one of four local classrooms, for pregnant women and families of infants and toddlers 0-3 years old.
