Betty began teaching at 18 years of age in a one-room rural school in Osage, Minnesota. She taught there 3 years then moved to Roseville, Michigan where she taught for 9 years before becoming an elementary school principal. She retired in June, 1986 from the Roseville Community Schools after 33 years of service.
Betty has served as a Macomb County Commissioner representing Roseville and Eastpointe since 1979, plus a six-month appointment in 1976, and now also represents part of Warren.
