Volunteers are critical members of the MSU Extension team. Common goals and interests motivate our volunteers to strengthen programs and get things done. Volunteers extend nonformal education and experiences to youth, families, and community members in an effort to help improve their lives and the communities in which they live. We are looking for volunteers to work in the following programs:

Great Lakes Education Program (GLEP): GLEP is a great way for older teen and adult volunteers to get involved in teaching children to appreciate and understand our unique water environment. Volunteers receive 18-24 hours of training and materials prior to working with youth. Students take a cruise down the Clinton River and across Lake St. Clair over to Metro Beach while learning through hands-on water activities that range from testing for dissolved oxygen to dragging for plankton. It's interesting, challenging, and fun! Click here to learn more about the program. Call 586-469-6085 if interested.

Youth Mentor: The MSU Extension 4-H Youth Mentor Program has provided mentor services to Macomb County youth since 1991. We match qualified adult volunteers with Macomb County youth in need of guidance, encouragement, and direction. The goal is to prevent youth from becoming more deeply involved with the Court systems. We are a prevention program, proven to save county tax dollars by diverting youth from more costly levels of care and intervention.
Mentor volunteers receive training and provide one-on-one mentoring services to youth ages 8-17. Adult volunteers are required to meet at least 2 hours a week with their mentee, working around their schedule. Mentors provide friendship support, and positive role modeling. They may engage the youth in formal education and/or recreational activities. In addition, volunteers and youth attend monthly workshops and support group meetings (Readiness Workshops and Mentor Roundtable Discussions) at the MSU Extension office.
