Clinton River Spillway Bike Path Project is located on the northwest corner of Harper and Wellington Crescent. Parking is available at Neil Reid High School, 37701 Harper, Clinton Twp, MI 48036. In the mid 1950’s, as protection against flooding, a two-mile canal or “spillway” was trenched from the Clinton River to Lake St. Clair. During this process, vegetation was cleared from the area. Several years ago a bike path was constructed along this clearing. In the spring of 1998, Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) Master Gardeners founded the “Clinton River Spillway Bike Path Project” with support from the Macomb County Public Works Office and the Charter Township of Clinton.
Since this project was a new undertaking, it was decided to locate the project on a manageable, one-mile segment of the path located in Clinton Township. As the project grows, it is hoped that volunteers may one day adopt the entire spillway path located in the adjacent communities. Supported primarily by donations and volunteers, the Clinton River Spillway Bike Path Project’s mission to beautify, enhance and protect the environment unfolded. Waste containers, benches, trees and plants were donated, then adopted by volunteers who tend the project site.
