MSU Extension partners with community leaders and businesses to develop programs to increase community capacity to improve the lives of young people where they live.  Extension staff train After School, Weekend and Summer youth program providers in the Skills for Life, Character Counts and Junior Master Gardener programs.

4-H Community Programs

Outdoor Education Skills Clinic

This program is designed to provide aquatic edcuation, promote ethical angling, develop fishing skills and introduce youth to the sport of archery.  This experience takes place at Pocket Park, an outdoor educational facility located within the Michigan State Fairgrounds.  Fishing education includes fish biology, fish habitat, equipment, ethics and angling skills development.  Archery education includes safety, equipment, technique, concentration and self-improvement.

Operation: Military Kids

Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is providing a Guard and Reserve Institute Training for school counselors, school social workers and nurses, educators and administrators.  This institute will provide information on how to best help our suddenly military families and their children.  Below are links for a letter from Mike Flanagan, Superintendent of Public Instruction, encouraging schools to participate in this training,  and the Institute registration form.

Proud Equestrian Program

The Michigan 4-H Proud Equestrian Program (PEP) is a therapeutic horse riding program designed to benefit handicapped riders physically, socially and emotionally.  Instructors are certified at the Cheff Center for the Handicapped in Augusta, Michigan, or through the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.  Safety equipment and specially trained horses and volunteers are used in the program.

The PEP Program is offered in both the spring and fall. Click here for a current program schedule.  In order to secure your spot, participant forms and payment must be submitted.  Register now.  Classes fill quickly!

Volunteers are welcome!  No horse experience needed-training provided. Help out in your community!  Help disabled youth gain a sense of achievement and raise their self-esteem.
