Coastal Communities Coastal Communities

Michigan's coastal communities face unique land-use challenges.

Many communities are experiencing unprecedented growth along prime Great Lakes shoreline. If unplanned, this growth may threaten sensitive coastal environments such as wetlands and sand dunes. Meanwhile, many urban communities are taking steps to revitalize their waterfronts to attract business, retain population and enhance quality of life. The principles of ecological health and a sound economy are at the heart of sustainable development. Michigan Sea Grant agents continue to assist coastal communities throughout the state in recognizing the close ties between a healthy ecosystem and a vital economy. Success stories include the Detroit River and the Grand Traverse Bay watershed.
